Objectives: This grounded-theory study examined how participants in a Satir-based premarital education program developed self-esteem and formed intimacy.
Methods: The researcher gathered data through in-depth interviews with five couples.
Results: Grounded theory analysis yielded 88 concepts, 30 subcategories, and 11 categories. The central phenomena identified were self-esteem and intimacy.
Conclusions: The researcher classified the participants in one of three ways-as growthcouples, nourishment couples, or conflict couples. Satir¡¯s Experiential Family Therapy model was effective in transforming and developing the relationships of the couples in the premarital education program through improvement in self-esteem and intimacy.
